Start with what you need

Most businesses need one of three things from an AI consultancy.

  • A decision: where AI fits, and which option to pursue.
  • Finished work: a website, a lead system or a content engine, built and live.
  • Ongoing help: a firm working on growth with you every week.

Knowing which one rules out half the market before your first call.

The main types of AI help

Each type of AI help suits a different need.

Type Best for Watch for
Do it yourself Learning and small tasks Progress stalls after the easy wins
Freelancer or automation agency One well-defined workflow Hard to change later; little strategy
Fractional AI executive Policy, governance and vendor choices Advice, usually not the build
Large consultancy Organization-wide programs Pace and price built for large companies
Strategy and execution consultancy One growth outcome, plan to shipped Ask who does the work and how
Hiring in-house A permanent, full-time need Slow to hire; someone still sets direction

Above Average Consulting is a strategy and execution consultancy.

Seven questions to ask any AI consultancy

These questions separate firms that ship from firms that mainly advise.

  1. What have you built that’s live? Ask for working examples, not slides.
  2. What’s your method? A good firm can name its stages and say what you get at each one.
  3. Who does the work, and how? Ask how senior people and AI tools share the work, and who reviews it.
  4. What will be live in 30 days? A specific answer is a good sign.
  5. Where will it run, and who owns it? Prefer your own accounts.
  6. What’s the price, and what’s fixed? Defined work can carry a fixed price.
  7. What happens to my data? Ask which AI services see it, on what terms, and where you sign off.

Red flags

These signs suggest a consultancy may not deliver.

  • No live examples, only frameworks and logos
  • Percentage gains promised before they’ve seen your business
  • A senior team in the pitch and a junior team on the work
  • AI running on customer-facing work with no sign-off
  • Everything built in their accounts, with no handover
  • A long paid discovery phase before anything is decided

When you don’t need a consultancy

You may not need one if your needs are personal productivity or one-off tasks. A good AI subscription and some practice will go a long way. A consultancy earns its fee when the work connects to your business and has to run without you.

Questions

What does an AI consultancy do?

An AI consultancy helps a business decide where AI can help. Depending on the firm, it also builds and runs the work.

Should I hire an AI consultant or a consultancy?

A solo consultant suits a narrow question. A consultancy suits work that spans strategy and delivery, because it brings a defined method and the capacity to build. Either way, ask who does the work.

How much does an AI consultancy cost?

It varies widely by type and scope. Ask for a fixed price on defined work. Our own Fast Start is $5,000 for two weeks.

How long until I see results?

For a focused piece of work, you should see something live within the first month.

Should I hire an AI consultancy or an agency?

Hire an agency for one defined workflow you're happy to hand over. Hire a consultancy when you need help deciding what to do as well as doing it.

Do I need a technical team?

Usually not. A good consultancy brings the technical work. Your team brings knowledge of the business and its customers.
